Evening Primrose Oil (EPO), black currant seed oil, and borage oil contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a substance made from omega-6. The GLA in evening primrose oil has an anti-inflammatory effect which has been shown to help rheumatoid arthritis. Evening primrose oil has been used as a skin moisturizer and has even helped cure skin diseases. Scientists have found that eczema, patches of itchy skin, may occur when an enzyme which converts omega-6 fatty acids to GLA is blocked. By providing GLA, evening primrose helps to clear eczema. Additionally, studies have shown that evening primrose oil helps make prostaglandins which lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood clotting and lower blood pressure.
